a part. The organization in question, a 30-bed hospital in a rural county, doesnt take to formal power too well. We
define power, in general, as the ability to bring about intended behavior and (hopefully) positive consequences in others behavior (Haefner). Along these lines, formal power involves positional power; meaning a
position that is used for power (Haefner). A president of a company has a position of power, simply because hes president. Informal power, in the meantime, involves power that is
used to make a difference and that is gathered over time by concern for others (Haefner). Good leaders are able to combine formal (through named authority) and informal power (through
obtaining respect) to bring about change in an organization. The scenario is that Mr. K., an experienced manager and leader in a
large healthcare institution, came aboard a 30-bed facility in a rural county. This facility was in financial trouble when Mr. K came on board. During his six-year tenure, Mr. K.
has been able to pull the organization out of financial trouble and now its operating in the black. Furthermore, the organization is currently underway on construction on a new hospital,
which will contain state-of-the-art equipment. In interviewing Mr. K., the questions and answers could run something like the following. Thanks, Mr. K., for talking to me today. Can you give
me an idea of your leadership style? These days? (laughs). Some days, Im part leader, trying to outline visions and goals for
