80s, 90s and beyond. Whats interesting to note, however, is that while people are surviving for longer periods, and while more people
are aging, the U.S. health care system of today isnt really geared to handle this trend. To explain this further, well discuss
the health care concerns about the growing senior citizen population, ages 65 and older, determine the impact of that demographic on the health care market and discuss how the challenges
of this demographic can be addressed. Population Data In 2006, the U.S. Census Bureau released a report entitled 65+ in the United States,
which had been commissioned by the National Institute on Aging (a component of the National Institutes of Health) (Dramatic changes, 2006). Some of the trends found in this report noted
that by the year 2030, almost one out of every five Americans (72 million people) will be 65 years or older (Dramatic changes, 2006). Another trend was that the age
group 85 years and older is now the fastest-growing segment of the U.S. population (Dramatic changes, 2006). Furthermore, according to the 2000 Census, 14 million people 65 years of age
and older reported "some level of disability," which were linked to chronic conditions such as heart disease or arthritis (Dramatic changes, 2006). The
