international society of the new age, the modern nurse must now include some knowledge of various cultures that he/she may come into contact with. The Filipino community is fast becoming
one of the fastest growing minority groups. As such, the health beliefs, health practices must be fully understood, as well as ones own inherent biases if adequate health care is
to be extended to the Filipino patient. For most Filipino people religion plays a significant role in their day-to-day lives. Most are Catholic but the Catholicism is influenced by the
various religions which existed before they were Christianized. According to the experts, their religion brings with it a type of acceptance in divine will. They believe that what will happen
will happen(MacDonald 1998). As this applies to the healthcare workers job, it could be crucial to understand that this is part of their belief system. Some in the Filipino
community may believe that they are ill because of Gods displeasure or that they have done something to bring about this bad luck on themselves. As such, it is their
cross to bear and they would be shamed to bring it to someone else. The healthcare worker must not attempt to alter the patients religious views, but to work within
the parameters of it. Suggesting that it was Gods will that the nurse came to seem them, may be a good start. Spiritual leaders are also a good source of
