easily accessible. As such, health information managers require coursework and continuing education to ensure they are keeping up with their profession, while
understanding the changes that are happening to the industry. But what are some of the specific ways in which the coursework and
continuing education help? How do these studies assist in the areas of communications, negations, problem-solving and decision-making skills, not to mention the changing field?
In its workforce report, AHIM has undertaken three strategic directions to push forward the profession and its members. These directions involve professional development, with an emphasis on specialized
areas of technical expertise as well as boosting the number of advanced certificates; promotion and enhancement of education programs to increase the number of qualified HIM professionals and positioning HIM
as a highly regarded profession that is important to patients, health care organizations and others (AHIMA, 2006). The report points out that
the changing "professional identity" of the HIM means that educational programs for certification and graduation are shifting as well, into programs that offer specialized areas of emphasis (AHIMA, 2006). At
the same time, the programs are relying on problem-based modules, technologies and hands-on, practical experience to both train HIM professionals in what they need to know, and to prepare them
