about the Canadian health care system, pointing to long lines at clinics and weeks to wait for various surgeries. To clear the air, it would be a good idea to
compare and contrast the two methods of health care delivery in these neighboring countries. In their 1999 report comparing the two countries
health care systems, Szick et al pointed out that during the middle of the 20th century, Canada and the U.S. had very similar health care systems. These days, the authors
point out, the Canadian system is mostly publicly funded by the government, while the U.S. system is funded through a private system. In other words, the Canadian system is single-payor
(the government), while the U.S. is ostensibly a free-market system, where many private companies vie for the ability to pay. What was interesting to note was that, in their search
of the literature, the quality of care in both systems was not statistically different, nor were outcomes (Szick et al, 1999). The advantage
of the Canadian system, of course, is the fact that everyone is insured, no matter what the pre-condition, age, and so on. But there are horror stories of inferior treatment,
government health-care rationing and lines to wait for treatment. But studies have shown during the past five or so years that the allegations are not strictly true. Delays do occur
