to get some kind of health care law passed that would provide health care insurance for all Americans. Given the emotional nature of this bill, the supporters of mandated health
care insurance for all Americans rejoiced at the laws passage, while those who were convinced that the law was the first step to a socialist health care system glumly predicted
Armageddon. Though its still way too soon to determine what the long-term impact of the bill will be (the majority of the provisions wont go into effect until 2014), we
can surmise that the truth will likely be somewhere in between. The act will ensure that at least a good portion of the currently uninsured 37 million Americans will have
some kind of access to some kind of insurance. How it will impact health outcomes, however, is anyones guess. But whats interesting to
note is that, in all of the discussion and arguments about the bill, is that there wasnt much discussed on the mental and emotional health side. There was a great
deal of rhetoric about uninsured Americans, people dying in emergency rooms and the uninsured being one accident, or illness, away from being destitute and homeless. But missing in all of
this rhetoric was how the act would impact the millions of people in the United States who suffer from emotional or physical disorders. Missing in the debate (except for maybe
an hour or two here and there on C-SPAN) was the discussion about substance abuse treatment and centers and psychiatric hospitals. The focus, interestingly enough, seemed to be on why
