However, with the increasing diversity in the United States, such news is not always welcome among some cultural groups. Many among the Asian community, in fact, tend
to believe that ignorance is the best way to treat an illness. This is an important issue - ignorance can sometimes lead to resistance, meaning the patient cant receive the
best medical are possible. In order to help promote behavior change among the Chinese and other Asian populations, we must first know
what the perception of health care is among this population. Once we can understand patient and family reluctance toward a complete diagnosis, steps can be taken to help bypass any
cultural reluctance toward helping the patient. Concept Explanation There is little doubt that illness and the role of healers such as doctors
and nurses are influenced by the backgrounds of patients (Koenig and Gates-Williams, 1995). This is especially true in the area of the Asian population. Many times, patients are not informed
of the true nature of their illnesses. While keeping such facts from the patients may be considered merciful it does, at times, end up interfering with providing the best patient
care possible from the health care team (Brotzman and Butler, 1991). This is especially the case when it comes to non-English speaking
patients whose families act as interpreters. In such situations, difficulties can arise when it comes to communication between the health care provider and patient (Brotzman and Butler, 1991). Although the
