Prevention and Health Promotions "Healthy People 2010" was created to help U.S. residents achieve better health and hopefully longer lives. What is
interesting to note, however, is that out of the 467 national health objectives outlined in the framework, 107 of those are directed toward those who are between the ages of
10 and 24, and who are considered adolescents and young adults (National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, 2004). Furthermore, out of those 107, 21 are considered "critical"
(National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, 2004). Two of these objectives are to reduce the proportion of children and
adolescents who are overweight or obese (objective 19-03) and to increase the number of adolescents who take part in "vigorous" physical activity (objective 22-07) (National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention
and Health Promotion, 2004). Recently, the Surgeon General formulated a call to action to try to help prevent overweight and obesity among
adolescents. Citing alarming statistics from 1999, the Surgeon Generals office pointed out that 13 percent of children between the ages of 6 and 11; and 14 percent of adolescents between
the ages of 12 and 19 were considered overweight (Surgeon General News, 2005). If that werent enough, this number is nearly triple the percentage from just two decades ago (Surgeon
General News, 2005). Additionally, Type 2 diabetes has increased in children and adolescence as well, and theres a direct link between the illness and obesity in children (Surgeon General News,
