on using this paper properly! In 1999, HBO debuted its controversial new series about an Italian-American family entitled, The Sopranos. The family calls New Jersey home, and patriarch Tony is in the "waste management" (Peyser and Chang 67) business. Translation: Tony Soprano is a mobster. The show immediately drew critical raves, and developed a strong and loyal cult following. Nearly thirty years after Francis Ford Coppola presented an intimate look of an Italian-American organized crime family in The Godfather, the same appeal which drew record numbers to the movie theaters is putting people in front of their television sets every Sunday at 9 p.m. The Godfather has become the gauge by which all subsequent "mob" features are judged. The Sopranos is no exception, and in fact, freely acknowledges its artistic inspiration. In fact, a mention of The Godfather is worked into the script of nearly every episode, because it has become a favorite flick among Mafiosos. In one episode, Tonys wife Carmela is having a late-night conversation with her priest, in which they are attempting to determine which Godfather film was the best (Bowman 58), and "a Moe Greene special," which refers to a casino owner in The Godfather who had his eye shot out after refusing to do business with the Corleones, is the Soprano crews preferred method of whacking or killing an enemy (Viner 1). In terms of style and form, there are similarities between Coppolas film, and David Chases television series, which the creator freely admits.
