centered his stories around a single event which gave his stories unity. Using this strategy, then, his feelings about the transcendental movement are readily observable in his work, The Blithedale
Romance. In reading Nathaniel Hawthornes works it behooves the serious scholar to understand the influences which may have shaped his philosophies and themes. Puritanism, among
other factors, were one of the major influences on Nathaniel Hawthornes life and his works. Though he held a contemptuous view of the Puritan way of life, he likewise despised
the transcendentalists as well. Puritanism was brought to the shores of America from those fleeing religious persecution in Europe. They seem to have departed
quite a bit from the views of Calvin and Luther. For example, the sermon was of utmost importance moreso than the preacher or the minister who brought the message. In
fact, in the Puritan faith a priest was not seen as the needed intercessory with God, but that all believers are equal. For all of their shortcomings, the Puritans did
believe that everyone (even women) should learn to read and write because the reading of the scriptures was thought to be one of the ways that a person was made
acceptable to God. Lastly, they also seem to have been quite democratic in their decision-making and in deciding their leadership of the community and church.
