major influences on Nathaniel Hawthornes life and his works. Though he held a contemptuous view of the Puritan way of life, he likewise despised the transcendentalists as well. However, the
Puritan influence can be seen through his works, especially Young Goodman Brown and The Ministers Black Veil. Puritanism was brought to the shores of America from those fleeing religious persecution
in Europe. They seem to have departed quite a bit from the views of Calvin and Luther. For example, the sermon was of utmost importance moreso than the preacher or
the minister who brought the message. In fact, in the Puritan faith a priest was not seen as the needed intercessory with God, but that all believers are equal. For
all of their shortcomings, the Puritans did believe that everyone (even women) should learn to read and write because the reading of the scriptures was thought to be one of
the ways that a person was made acceptable to God. Lastly, they also seem to have been quite democratic in their decision-making and in deciding their leadership of the community
and church. Nathaniel Hawthorne had issues, it would seem, with the prevailing sentiments of his day and age as regarded the sinful nature of mankind. Through his short stories
he managed to illustrate some of the ridiculous restrictions and excessive emotional burdens that various religions placed on the backs of the believers, all in the name of salvation. In
his short stories, Young Goodman Brown and The Ministers Black Veil, one can readily see the irony, and the subtle use of symbolism as it portrays these themes of sin
