with outdoor themes and issues that are of importance to the young reader. His book, Hatchet, tells about survival in the outdoors, but its theme of survival and of hope
are integral and applicable to the young reader today who must survive other sorts of adversaries and situations. I. For fifty-four days a young man named, Brian Robeson, manages to
survive with only his basic instincts and a small hatchet(Eriksson 2003). The hatchet, the reader learns, is a gift from his mother. Lost in the Canadian wilderness, Brian uses his
wits against mother natures worst circumstances, and survives. Symbolically, the hatchet is reminiscent of Brians mother and her love for him. It is all he has with him and
it is what sustains him and gives him a fighting chance against the wilds of the forest. Additionally, one could state that the hatchet is symbolic of that which one
is born with, what ones mother imparts to one upon birth. Brian has only himself and the gifts that he has been born with. However, they are enough. He lives.
II. Brian becomes separated from the adults in his life when the pilot, who is flying Brian to be with his father (the parents are divorced), has a heart attack
and dies. The plane crashes, but Brian manages to survive it by landing the plane in a lake. Brians journey begins. While he is ostensibly trying to get to
help, he is also dealing with the anger, frustration and sadness of his parents divorce(Character analysis 2003). The forest teaches him about survival, about listening, watching, about overcoming large obstacles,
and about the rewards of perseverance. III. The theme of survival is applicable to Brians immediate situation in the wilds as well as to the situation on the homefront(Themes 2003).
