away, Truman ended up overseeing the end of World War and overseeing the start of the Cold War. He was Roosevelts third vice president; within months of Roosevelts third-term inauguration,
he died, and Truman found himself having to deal with everything from development of the atomic bomb to the threat of communism (Beschloss and Sidey, 2009). In August 1945, Truman
ordered atomic bombs dropped on Japanese cities devoted to war work, thus speeding up Japans surrender after the War (Beschloss and Sidey, 2009). Upon his reelection in 1948, Truman was
faced with an aggressively growing Soviet Union, which was pressuring Turkey and threatening to take over Greece (Beschloss and Sidey, 2009). This led to the Truman Doctrine, a doctrine that
was dedicated to the containment of communism. In March 1947, Truman made his address before Congress, declaring that the U.S. foreign policy would involve assisting any country that was threatened
by communism (Truman Doctrine). The fear, at the time, was that if certain countries fell to communism (in this case, Greece and Turkey), others would follow like dominos - this
was to be known as the Domino Theory of communism (Truman Doctrine). Congress approved Trumans $4 million request to assist Greece and Turkey, and American support was signed into law
which, in turn, helped Greece and Turkey resist communism (Truman Doctrine). The doctrine included the Berlin airlift in 1948, a military alliance to
protect Western nations (the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, or NATO, established in 1949) and in 1950, when the communist government of North Korea attacked South Korea, Truman met the aggression,
