lineage, but one is weak while the other is strong. Yet, for their tragic flaws, it must also be said that both women led tragic lives, trapped by the society
which dictated their every move. Of many tragic victims in this play, Ophelia is perhaps one of the most innocent of them. It becomes apparent that she is an
unwitting victim of the men around her when her father and her lover, Hamlet, place her between a rock and a hard place. Her father orders her to leave Hamlet.
She really has no recourse, since a young woman during this time and day was completely reliant upon the men in her life for sustenance. If she refuses her fathers
command, she has no one to care for her as she has been told that Hamlet has lost his mind. Hamlet is also grief stricken when she tells him that
she cant be with him. He reacts badly and states: "Get thee to a nunnery. Why wouldst thou be a breeder of sinners?"(Act3, sc.1, li. 122). In some anthologies, the
student may wish to add, the nunnery was often a renaissance term for whorehouse. He just called her a whore. Ophelia has two choice at this point. She can marry
and leave her father, or suffer through this madness with Hamlet. While she is still deciding, her father is killed and she is sure that Hamlet does not love her.
Left without anyone to protect or provide for her, she realizes that her life is effectively over. This seems maudlin in todays society, when women are independent and capable
