most people tend to lump "marketing" with "sales and advertising," there is more to the marketing process than putting a few ads in the newspaper. According to the American Marketing
Association, marketing is defined as "the activity, set of institutions and processes for creating, communicating, delivering and exchanging offerings that have value for customers, clients, partners and societies at large"
(Definition of Marketing, 2009). The AMA furthermore discusses marketing research, defining it as "the function that links the consumer, customer and public to the marketer through information," which is used
to help determine potential marketing opportunities, ideas and processes (Definition of Marketing, 2009). For our salon, therefore, our marketing efforts will consist of deciding the market (based on the services
offered), then figuring out a marketing communications plan to reach that market. In conducting the market research, we need to determine first
if the salon will be for both men and women, or for one or the other - while being a unisex salon means more customers, more staff would have to
be hired to provide a wider range of services and styles for the customers (Market Research, 2009). But just catering to women means providing higher-quality services, which are likely to
cost more (Market Research, 2009). The best way to decide what the likely market might be is through a focus group,
