Guyana possesses many facets due to colonialism and agricultural production. One of the most important products of Guyana is sugar cane. Another product, a mineral, is bauxite. These two items have all but ensured the survival of this region, and have called for the necessity of workers throughout Guyanas somewhat modern history. When sugar cane was first seen as a powerful source of income and sustenance for Guyana the workers were slaves brought from Africa. But, as slavery was abolished in the 19th century Guyana found it necessary to find workers to keep up with the production of the sugar cane plantations. This is when immigration, through indentured servants, truly took hold in Guyana. The following paper examines what affect sugar cane and bauxite had upon immigration to Guyana, while also discussing the legacy left behind as it relates to those indentured servants, most of whom stayed to further play a part in the evolution and development of Guyana. Guyana: Bauxite and Sugar Cane With the French/British rule it was soon discovered that sugar cane was a valuable product of Guyana. "Sugar was first grown in colonial Guyana in 1658 but was not produced on a large scale until the late 1700s, about 100 years later than in the rest of the Caribbean region" (Library of Congress, 1992). It is interesting to note that in terms of sugar cane plantations in general, Guyana got involved late in the endeavor and as such the British were able to bring in already advanced and developed equipment which "gave the local sugar industry a firm foundation and made it the leading sector of the local economy" (Library of Congress, 1992).
