poverty in Haiti. It is the story of a man, a woman, and their child. But, it is also a story of freedom, dreams, oppression, struggles, and many more human
conditions. The man/husband/father of the story is Guy. The following paper looks at a significant action taken by Guy, and analyzes elements of the action as it relates to his
family. Guy in A Wall of Fire Rising by Edwidge Danticat The significant action taken by Guy is that of stealing the hot air balloon, flying into the
air, and then jumping to his death amidst the crowd which included his wife, Lili, and son, Little Guy. As one could well imagine, this action clearly involved, and impacted,
the family of Guy. In order to understand the impact and importance of his act one must look at the story from the beginning. In the very beginning of
the story the reader gets the impression that this family is a very loving and close family. Guy returns at the end of the day to tell Lili that he
has something to tell her but they are interrupted by their little son who wants to talk about his part in a play. This part plays a very significant role
in illustrating the struggles of the people, as well as the struggles of Guy. It is also where the title of the play comes in: "A wall of fire is
rising and in the ashes, I see the bones of my people. Not only those people whose dark hollow faces I see daily in the fields, but all those souls
who have gone ahead to haunt my dreams. At night I relive once more the last caresses from the hand of a loving father, a valiant love, a beloved friend"
