Roland, whose lives are disrupted when a old family friend, Leon Marechal, dies and leaves Jean his entire fortune, with absolutely no inclusion of Pierre in his will. Curiosity is
expressed about this strange set of circumstances and this curiosity, combined with increasing resentment and jealousy, festers in the Pierres heart like a cancer. Pierre becomes obsessed with discerning the
motivation behind his brothers legacy and his success at uncovering his mothers past causes the dissolution of his family and Pierres self-imposed exile. The principal theme of this novel is
the effect that resentment, jealousy and suspicion have on family dynamics, with particular emphasis on its detrimental effect on Pierre. This brief novelette opens with the Roland family living
happily and peacefully in Le Havre, which the location chosen for this retirement by M. Roland as most conducive to his passion for fishing. The family has just returned from
a Sunday fishing trip when they learn of Jeans inheritance. Both sons are grown. Jean is studying law and Pierre is a recently graduated doctor about to embark on his
career as a physician. From the onset, Pierre is jealous and this gives rise to prolonged periods of introspection, as well as contemplation of the resemblance between Marechal and
Jean, which is evident from the picture of the family friend that his mother keeps on the mantelpiece. Unaware of the torturous thoughts plaguing his brother, jean goes about pursuing
career and marriage options. He rents an apartment that Pierre had been planning to rent and use as his medical office and starts courting a young widow, Mme. Rosemilly. Unnerved
