interest groups including the NRA, the House, the Senate, the Airline Pilots Association and others. PILOTS CARRYING GUNS It has long been the stance of the National Rifle
Association that if the airlines pilots involved in the September 11 terrorist attacks had been allowed to carry guns the attacks would never have been carried out. While nobody
can predict what the outcome might have been had the pilots been armed, it is safe to say that the National Rifle Association is greatly in favor of allowing pilots
trained in the use of firearms to be allowed to have guns in the cockpits. Opponents to that stance recommend the use of sky marshals rather than having the pilots
armed. The National Rifle Association disagrees with this however. "To protect all domestic flights would take 150,000 of them, so its very unlikely there will be a federal
air marshal on your next flight," said National Rifle Association Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre. "But, you can bet there will be pilots, and they should have the right to
protect that cockpit with a firearm" (Burns, 2002, PG). The Airline Pilots Association, which is the largest pilots union, requested support from its members in helping to pass the bill
that would allow guns in the cockpit. Many pilots feel that if the pilots are trained in the use of firearms and feel comfortable with using a gun, there
