a number of issues relating to national and international economics which are presented in the film Gung Ho. For example, there are different economic strategies operative in the US
and Japan, which in effect sets the background for the film. In the 1980s, there was considerable rivalry between American and Japanese manufacturing industry, but this must be considered in
the light of the respective history of the two countries.
Immediately following the Second World War, American social and economic policies had a significant influence on the development of Japan, and this is
something which continued to affect both countries in subsequent decades. In 1945, Japan was devastated both politically and economically, and it was, to a great extent, the aid given
by the USA which allowed the country to regenerate: however, there were considerable cultural clashes between the mindsets of the two nationalities which meant that although Japan was dependant on
the US for financial and pragmatic support, it was also able to change its direction in terms of production in ways which allowed it to become much more autonomous. Having
relied formerly on oil, for instance, Japan was able to diversify during the oil crises of the 1970s into the manufacture of electronic components, and to retain its economic stability
as a result.
By the 80s, as is shown in the film, Japan had established itself in the world market as a serious rival to the US with regard to various aspects of
