is good news, endemic gun injuries "exact an ongoing toll" and may, therefore, "give rise to new epidemic outbreaks" (Christoffel, 2007, p. 626). The peak year for gun-related injuries
was 1993 when gun deaths totaled 39,595, which equates to 15.4 per 100,000 in population. After the peak, there was a drop of 25 percent by 2000, but the total
rose again slightly after 2000 (Christoffel, 2007). Nevertheless, this increase was still at a far lower level than during the epidemic years. After 2000, the yearly number of gun-related injuries
has stayed between 58,000 and 64,000, that is, between 20.4-21.9 per 100,0000 (Christoffel, 2007). While this figure is actually higher than during the epidemic years, Christoffel (2007) argues that
this indicates that firearm injuries are endemic rather than epidemic because the incidence rate has flattened. She writes, "These flat trends mean that the current level of US firearm injuries
has become routine to the general population" (Christoffel, 2007, p. 626). The incidence of gun-related injuries is such that most people are unfamiliar with this threat to public health,
as they have not been victims of gun violence. Therefore, within this social framework, there is "reduced public attention to firearm injuries" and it is the duty of public health
practitioners to alert their clients to this possibility (Christoffel, 2007, p. 626). Impact of the problem on the client An online source using the latest available statistics places the
