Therefore, the application of Gulliver’s own cultural experience to the act of description is not only appropriate, but the entire purpose of the work, as, through the narrative voice of Gulliver, Swift can making scathing comments about the political and social facts of his era. entire purpose of the work, as, through the narrative voice of Gulliver, Swift can making scathing comments about the political and social facts of his era. For example, when
Gulliver is being held by the Lilliputians in their capital, he witnesses the sport of rope dancing, which entails a candidate for high governmental office balancing himself on a rope
held six inches off the floor. The point of the sport is to jump high into the air and come down standing on the rope. Gulliver comments that "whoever
jumps the highest, without falling, succeeds to the office" (Swift). Merit, intelligence or ability has nothing to do with whether or not a candidate for high office gets the job.
Rather, the emperor makes his decision based on the ability of the individuals ability to adhere to court protocol, no matter how absurd. In chapter 5 of Gullivers first
voyage, he saves the Lilliputian emperors palace from certain destruction by urinating on it in order to put out a fire that threatens the very life of
the Emperor. In this incident, Swift satirizes princely ingratitude and the "absurdity of legal formalism" (Morvan 219). While Gulliver was simply showing "commendable resourcefulness," he finds himself in trouble. He
