begins the long, slow path to recovery. It is typically associated with an antecedent infection, which causes a reactive autoimmune response between the pathogen and nerve tissue (Newswanger and Warren,
2004). Testing and Diagnosis: GBS diagnosis is derived from consideration of its typical clinical manifestations, which includes conducting electro-diagnostic tests and examination of the patients cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) (Newswanger
and Warren, 2004). Electro-diagnostic results that are suggestive of GBS include when the H reflex is absent; when the sensory nerve action potentials have low amplitude or are absent; when
there is an abnormal F wave; as well as less frequently encountered abnormalities (Newswanger and Warren, 2004). CSF results that are indicative of GBS included finding an elevated protein, i.e.,
"higher than 0.55 g per DL...without pleocytosis," that is, the presence of abnormal cells in the CSF (Newswanger and Warren, 2004, p. 2405). Treatment: Treatment generally involves "supportive care,
ventilation management (in about one third of patients), and specific therapy with intravenous immunoglobulin or plasmapheresis" (Newswanger and Warren, 2004, p. 2405). Patients who have been treated with plasmapheresis early
have been known to require less mechanical ventilations and hospitalization. It should be remembered in nursing someone with GBS that, while paralyzed, many GBS patients are mentally alert and, therefore,
stress ad fearful concerning what is happening to them. Reassurance and description of the phases of the illness and the positive prospects for recovery reduce the patients level of
psychological stress (Newswanger and Warren, 2004). Physical therapy: Physical therapy actually begins while the patient is receiving supportive care, as "gentle massage, passive range of motion exercises, and frequently
position changes can both greatly aid pain management and aid in delaying muscle degeneration (Newswanger and Warren, 2004). Tuckey and Greenwood (2004) offer a case study that suggests that the
