refection, but there is also a causal relationship between the economy and the society. For example, if we look to China we can see that the ideals o the Peoples
Republic of China, not to be confused with the Republic of China, based in Taiwan, is that of a communist state, and as such the economy is a communist
economy. However, it is against this that a more traditional economy exist, that of the gift economy which is part of the art of guanxi (Yan, 2001).
When we look at the way that the official Chinese economy has been developing there has been an opening up of the economy in an
acceptance of globalisation and the governments desire to benefit for globalisation. This has meant that there is a need to allow internal investment and at least a level of competition
arise, however the economy is still very strongly regulated and centrally controlled by the government. China is a communist state, the leaders
are not capitalists although there are moves towards a more capitalist economy with the recent changes and increasing access to the markets to foreign investors. However, the country is still
run by anti-capitalist leaders, and the way in which business is conducted in the state reflects this culture (Taylor, 2000). The way in
which the commercial market is controlled is still a barrier and can be seen as part of the conflicting strategy in the country. In order to trade a company needs
to have a license of authority from the government and to be able to get through the barriers of bureaucracy (Taylor, 2000).
