among businesses. The social network theory in the West attempts to do the same thing. It provides connections and support between businesses. If one belongs to a Social Network, they
are expected to demonstrate some degree of loyalty to the other members. This allows one business to connect with another. The guanxi network in China is similar to both the
Japanese keiretsu and the Wests Social Network systems. It is somewhat different in that members take very seriously the obligation and debt owed to other members. It is also based
on favors so that if one manager does a favor or gives a gift to another manager, the favor becomes reciprocal at some time in the future. Guanxi
networks have existed forever. Some think that as China becomes more involved in global competition, the guanxi will fade away. Others believe the guanxi system is more important than ever.
