following paper examines the theme of growth, seeds, and procreation in Shakespeares Macbeth. Growth: Macbeth The primary elements that speak of growth, seeds, and procreation in the play
of Macbeth involves Banquos seeds, his offspring, who will be kings, and also the growth and planting of seeds of plans instigated by Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. Throughout the play
it is essentially Lady Macbeth who plants seeds of desire and longing in Macbeth where the prophecy is concerned. "She taunts him to act on his desires" (Johnston). She nags
him and pushes him, engaging in all levels of deceit and murder with the intent of killing the seeds of Banquo while nourishing the growth of the plan to put
Macbeth on the throne. In the beginning of the play Banquo makes note of seeds of growth to one of the witches, challenging her it seems as well as
the prophecy for he is not a lustful man who seems to really believe the prophecy. He tells the witch, "If you can look into the seeds of time, And
say which grain will grow and which will not, Speak then to me, who neither beg nor fear Your favours nor your hate" (Shakespeare I iii). This essentially lays the
