recollection of the narrators Irish boyhood because he recalls situations like going to school and getting into mischief with his buddies in carefully worded, thoughtful descriptions that could only be
articulated by a mature adult. On the surface, it might appear to the casual reader that going to the local Araby bazaar on a Saturday night to pick up
a gift for a young neighborhood girl is an innocuous event of little significance. However, the fact that the narrator remembers every detail and offers insightful comments about his
thoughts and feelings at what is for him forever frozen in time reveals the enormity of the moment. "Araby" is a short story about growing up, of a boy
coming of age, and the lessons he learns as a matter of consequence. Way back then, the unnamed narrator lived for the moment "when the Christian Brothers School set the
boys free" (Joyce 810). For an unspecified reason, the boy was living not with his parents but with his working-class aunt and uncle. Otherwise, everything was perfectly normal
for this youngster who loved nothing more than getting together with his friends and playing games and pranks that are so much a part of the childhood experience. But
then, a girl referred to only as Mangans sister (obviously the sister of one of his friends) enters the story, and there is a sense that this boys life will
never be quite the same. Readers can almost hear his hormones raging in his impassioned reminiscences of his dream girl: "Her dress swung as she moved her body and
the soft rope of her hair tossed from side to side... When she came out on the doorstep my heart leaped. I ran to the hall, seized my books and
