three or four basic positions that individuals can hold within a group that can help to balance the group dynamic and support group performance. These include: natural leaders;
listeners; recorders (individuals responsible for recording the activity of the group); and debaters. In group work scenarios, the least beneficial individual is someone who does not take on any
of these characteristics, and instead acts as a complacent participant, rarely adding anything to the group dynamic. Though listeners may appear to be this kind of individual, they actually
play a definitive role by noting arguments and reiterating them at different points in the discussion. In each case, group work is dependent on the contributions of each of the
groups members. When individuals initially participate in a group situation, it may be difficult to determine what role each person will play. Leaders, for example, are not always
obvious at the onset of any group work process. The presence of a natural leader, one individual who moves to the front of the group and provides the other
with direction is often beneficial to the work team performance. Situational leadership can occur in the midst of the unexpected
and when natural leaders come to the forefront of an activity. For example, when an educator instructs children in the performance of a group task, it is not uncommon
