The true story of an newly-integrated football team, which occurred in Alexandria, Virginia in 1971, illustrates the principal points of team development. In 1971, a federally-mandated integration plan called
for T.C. Williams High School to be combined with two other high schools in the Alexandria area. The school board decided to appoint a black man, Herman Boone (played by
Denzel Washington), to be the schools head football coach, replacing the white coach Bill Yoast (Will Patton) (Bruckheimer and Boaz, 2001). Yoast decides to stay on as an assistant coach
in order to aid in the transition. Nevertheless, fighting between the various groups in the school occurs everyday. The arrival of the new coach causes a great deal of speculation.
The white football players talk of boycotting practice because they are certain that the black coach will not allow them to play. The black players are equally certain that the
