In order to look at how this operates within a workplace environment it is necessary to first look at the differences between team work and group work. In both cases teams and groups are made up of individuals, which may be defined as a single person. A group may be defined as "An assemblage of persons or objects gathered or located together" (Dictionary.com, 208). In the commercial or workplace environment groups are a collection of individual people that have come together for a specific purpose (Heller, 1998). In a group there may be a single purpose, but the group members work independently or individually. It is possible that a group will have a leader, but there may be fragmentation and there will not be any defined roles (Heller, 1998). Teams are different from group; they are more defined and have more than a specific purpose in common. This may be defined as "number of persons associated in some joint action" (Dictionary.com, 2008). This indicates that the actions are undertaken in q different way, here the individuals I the team do not work independently they will work together (Huczyniski and Buchanan, 2003). The team members should have a shared sense of purpose, trust each other and good teams will benefit from good communications, sting leadership, but this should not be confused with autocratic or directed leadership, the ability to manage and overcome conflict and a commitment to the team (Heller, 1998).
