of a group. Groups form outside of the business world, but teams or other types of groups are often found in organizations. Group dynamics is a subject equated with a
large body of research in the social sciences that goes to examining how people work in small groups (Levi, 2001). In discussing group dynamics in the business world,
the concept of teams usually comes to the forefront. In fact, Levi (2001) refers to groups and teams and uses the terms interchangeably. The distinction is important however because much
of the literature on group dynamics discuss and use teams as examples. For many theorists, the concept of the group and team are similar. At least, the distinction is "fuzzy"
(Levi, 2001, p.4). For many theorists, teams are groups in business structures, but for other theorists, there is a greater difference (Levi, 2001). Some see the team as contrived and
are found in organizational settings, something not necessarily true of all groups (Levi, 2001). Obviously, there are groups that are not created. People become members of cliques in high
school, or they become friends with others and fall into an informal group. An example of this is the group of friends found in the television show Sex and the
City. Four women get together and discuss their personal lives. This is certainly a group of four, but there is no formal structure to this ensemble. Levi (2001) explains that
the term group is the more inclusive term than is the idea of the team. In light of the research, it makes sense to discuss group dynamics for multiple situations.
