serious mental health problems, as well as problems such as forms of addiction or overcoming certain phobias that interfere with their lives (Types of psychotherapy, 2005). While individual counseling is
an option, many people turn to group therapy, and within this context, there are also multiple types. Group therapy refers to a form of counseling in which small groups
of people, who usually are focused on the same or similar problem areas, meet regularly to discuss individual issues and aid each other in recovery. This is done under the
guidance of a trained therapist (Types of psychotherapy, 2005). Like individual counseling, group counseling is designed to aid people would wish to improve their ability to handle the problems in
their lives (Tsai, 2005). Groups are usually small, typically with six to eight participants (Tsai, 2005). One of the advantages of group counseling over individual therapy is that clients are
able to learn more effective interpersonal communication skills by sharing their experiences with more than one person (Tsai, 2005). Group counseling also offers individuals a "sense of hope and
universality" (Tsai, 2005). With group therapy there is the realization that others share the same problem. A person with a specific problem, such as bulimia, may feel that he or
she is the only person in the world to ever binge and then purge by vomiting. Group counseling offers the experience of talking to others who are caught in the
