Part 1: The Narrative Structure of Groundhog Day Groundhog Day begins by introducing the audience to the principal characters. Phil Connors (Bill Murray) is a weatherman for a TV station in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He is sent to Punxsutawney, PA, to cover the annual Groundhog Day Festival with producer Rita Hanson and a cameraman, Larry. This exposition reveals Phil to be a self-centered, macho jerk, who never thinks of others or considers anyone elses perspective or comfort but his own. Rita and Larry stay at a motel, while Phil has been booked into a bed-and-breakfast inn, as she guessed that he would be difficult to please in terms of accommodations. There is also additional insight offered into Phils character when he runs into Ned Ryerson, whom he should remember from high school, but obviously does not until Ned reminds him that he used to go with Phils sister, until Phil told him not to anymore (Groundhog Day). This shows that Phil has always been a jerk, even in his youth, as first of all, he dismissed ordinary people, such as Ned, as beneath him and his family, even then. Ned is annoying, but obviously Phils sister liked him enough to date him four times until Phil intervened in her personal life.
