portrays the intense conflict that arises between Glen, the manager of the Black Beauty Minerals Plant located in Mobile, Alabama, and Roy Jones, a former employee of the plant and
Glens bookie, which means that Glen is in debt to Roy by over four thousands dollars at the beginning of the narrative, and this debt escalates as the story unfolds.
Examination of the story suggests that the most fundamental difference between Glen and Roy is not differences in race or morality, but rather the fact that Roy is a man
who is supremely confident and secure in his ability to bend people to his will while Glen lacks confidence. However, by standing up to Roy and defending himself against mutilation
and domination, he finds the confidence to reshape his life. The story opens with Glen firing Roy, who is African American, overweight, cigar smoking and vulgar. Roy already knows
that the word has come down from Ernie and Dwight, the plants absentee owners, to fire him and Roy makes Glen a counteroffer, which is to run clandestine night shifts,
with Roy selling the resulting sandblasting grit to the independent buyers that he has lined up. Up till this point in this life, Glen has been a responsible, but tough,
