discusses his novel The Rainmaker. Discussion In legal terms, were told, a "rainmaker" is a law partner type with connections-the kind of connections that bring in big clients with deep
pockets: "Banks, insurance companies, FORTUNE 500 corporations, major-league baseball team owners--that kind of thing" (Lyons, 1995, p. 48). But the protagonist of Grishams novel is not such a person; Rudy
Baylor is a recent law school grad, hes just been kicked out of his apartment for non-payment of rent; hes lost his girlfriend; and he didnt get the job he
wanted because the firm he applied to merged with another (Lyons, 1995). How can such an apparent loser be a rainmaker? Because he brings in a huge case and wins
it, thats how. That is the premise of Grishams novel: that one small person, standing against the system and doing whats right, can make a huge difference. That is in
fact the thesis of all Grishams novels, which are pure formula: smart little guy, big evil firm, impossible odds, little guy stands up for whats right and brings big firm
to its knees. The formula works, however, so Grisham apparently sees no need to change it. It plays into many fantasies, especially the one that its possible for an individual
to make a difference, and that huge corporations can be made to do the right thing. Because this is a Grisham novel and a work of fiction, saying that
he supported his thesis well is tantamount to saying that he wrote convincingly, which he did. He isnt writing a non-fiction book where he has to be prepared to give
readers facts and back them up. But he does need to convince us that what hes saying, and the situations he invents are plausible; hes done that. We become involved
