Ronald Grimsley. Discussion Existentialism, according to the Stanford Dictionary of Philosophy, is a term that now resides more comfortably in history than as an active and workable description of a type of philosophy (Crowell). Crowell argues that the term was "explicitly adopted as a self-description by Jean-Paul Sartre," and widely disseminated by him through his work, both literary and philosophical. Others in the movement at that same time include Simone de Beauvoir and Albert Camus and because of their status and influence in society, existentialism "became identified with a cultural movement that flourished in Europe in the 1940s and 1950s" (Crowell). The movement included those above as well as others like Martin Heidegger, one of the most influential of all but who later repudiated the term and the field; Friedrich Nietzsche; Kierkegaard; Martin Buber in Germany and Lev Shestov in Russia (Crowell). These names identify people who are existentialists in the sense we tend to use the word: the examination of this concept is their main concern. But the idea of trying to find the meaning of existence is so beguiling that people working in other fields are also considered existentialists; it is a well-developed literary genre and includes writers such as Sartre himself but also Ibsen, Kafka and Ionesco (Crowell); these writers are usually defined as belonging to the "theater of the absurd." This too is as much a philosophical term as a theatrical one, since it speaks to a subset of plays, such as Sartres classic No Exit, that question the meaning of mans existence.
