any employment relationship there will be a potential for disputes and disagreements to occur. This may be between employee and employer or between employees. The result of these issues may result in the use of the grievance and disciplinary procedures. Many areas of human resource management has been the subject of study, research into grievance and discipline procedures has been relatively constrained compare to other areas such as motivation. Research which has taken place tends to focus on areas such as the impact of procedures management and employees, influences that increase the likelihood of grievance or discipline procedures being used and aspects such as fairness and justice. Studies which look at the procedures themselves have tended to focus on areas such as legal requirements and organisational efficiency and have tended to take place within the last two decades of the 20th century. This paper seeks to increase the knowledge base concerning grievance and disciplinary procedures by looking at the ways in which different procedures can manifest in companies with the use of examples of different types and approaches of grievance and disciplinary procedures. In examining this three divergent companies have been chosen, in all cases they are undertaking some form of manufacturing, but the corporate culture and approach to human relations is different in each company. The three companies chosen are Seventh Generation Inc., a company with a range of environmentally friendly products and a culture which embraces many humanist values; Toyota which is a large international company and a founding company in the development of modern TQM tools.
