In the automotive industry, workers are aligned with unions and grievances are formal. Thus, the supervisor is in a unique position to ameliorate any difficulties on the shop floor and prevent an eventual strike. Of course, it is hoped that the front line supervisor would be able to use acquired skills in order to keep things in check. Still, the grievance procedure is often implemented when a problem crops up, something that has a unique history in the automotive industry. One author explains that "...both the TULC and the UAW still believe that the way to achieve greater equality in the union and on the shop floors was to work through the existing procedures for dispute resolution-namely, the grievance procedure" (Thompson, 2001, p.105). In order to comprehend the grievance procedure in the context of the automotive industry, the union is at the forefront. The concept of the union is slowly fading as jobs are shipped overseas. In fact, some unions fight so that the workers can keep their jobs and for example and support candidates who are against trade contracts which hurt their workers. But of course, unions were first created to protect the workers from big business. Throughout history, but particularly during the industrial revolutions, workers would begin to demand rights. They were tired of working eighteen hour days and in negative and dangerous working conditions.
