of Susies mother, there is more than shock and sadness. Just as empty nesters feel as if their work is done when their children leave the abode, Susies unexpected death
prompts feelings of loss and regret. What does having a family mean anyway if it can be taken away so swiftly? It is as if her dream had been taken
away in one moment and that her stint with motherhood had been meaningless. In some way, the mother abandons her role and her husband takes over. The character completely
changes after the incident. The role differential to some extent puts strain on the marriage. As in any marriage, tragedy will change things. Many marriages do not survive the loss
of a child. Yet, it seems as if Susies father is coping much better, moving on with life and accepting his daughters tragic death. The mothers reaction is complicated. It
is not as if she goes through the normal grieving process. Her bitterness lasts and to some extent, brings out the worst in her. The diagnosis is complex because it
seems as if this mother was not happy in the past. The illusion of motherhood and family as a panacea had kept this woman going, but she was not happy.
There is much evidence of this. Susie, the dead fourteen year old is the narrator and observes her mothers behavior as well as remembering many past events. There is an
anecdote about the fact that her mother was enthralled by a clock on her new oven, something her own mother would care little about (Sebold 12). It does appear that
the mother is somewhat fixated on being the perfect homemaker. Susie remembers: "As my father pulled into the garage, she would rush about, fixing him a cocktail, a dry sherry,
