This writer, for example, knows that personally how grief can affect a family when a loved one suffers from terminal cancer. For a long time, we did not know what was wrong with my mother. Her red blood count was extremely low and doctors suspected a number of illnesses. Just a month after the diagnosis of leukemia was finally made, Mom was hospitalized, with her condition rapidly declining. The doctor suggested a treatment that would either send the leukemia into remission or make it progress much faster. My father chose to take the chance. It didnt work. Mom was suffering and in great pain, Dad was told that to give her sufficient morphine to alleviate her pain would probably cause renal failure and death. Dad chose, and the family agreed, not to let my mother suffer. While this was the correct and moral decision, as no procedure would have saved my mothers life at this point, knowing that her death was actively hastened exacerbated my grief and my fathers at times over the years.
