needs. For example, while there are groups and counseling support services for children and older adults who are grieving the loss of a loved one, there appears to be
a general lack grief support groups for youths and young adults. One of the underlying reasons for this is that it may be assumed that youths and young adults
may be resistant to group work principles in the presence of substantive emotional loss, or that school services are perceived as an adequate venue for addressing loss when schools are
made aware of the loss. In cases of the loss of a spouse, there is only limited research about the impacts of this transforming issue on the lives of
youths and young adults. Description of the Group The group will address the needs of youths and young adults between the ages of 17-25 who have experienced
the loss of a spouse. The decision to select this specific age group is linked to the growing number of young people in this age group who have become
widowed in recent years. Whether widowed as a result of illness, accidental death, or as a product of war, this population shares some unique characteristics. Since the
war in Iraq began in 2003, over 4,000 soldiers have died in action, leaving a growing number of widowed spouses with an average age of 24 (George et al., 2009).
Though this is just one segment of the population of youths and young adults mourning the loss of a spouse as a result of accidental death, illness or homicide,
the losses are particularly recognizable because the average age of 24 suggests that there is a significant population between the ages of 17-25 that could benefit from counseling measures.
