also, modern readers can discern the depth of this theologian through close examination of his writing. The son of a devout Roman senator, Pope Gregorys family history is
closely connected to the Church, as at the time of his birth in 540, his family had already produced two pontiffs and his mother Sylvia, as well as two his
fathers sisters would later be canonized.2 Although he was appointed at the age of thirty-three to be the Prefect of the city of Rome, he resigned this powerful position within
a year in order to pursue a monastic life.3 Gregory, during this life time, put his considerable personal fortune to work for the Church by founding seven monasteries, six of
which were located on his family estates in Sicily.4 A seventh, which was dedicated to St. Andrew was erected on the Clivus Scauri in Rome and it was this monastery
that Gregory joined.5 In 578, Pope Benedict I appointed Gregory to be one of the seven deacons of Rome and the following year, he was sent by Pope
Pelagius II as ambassador to the Imperial court in Constantinople. It was at this time that the first of his commentaries was set written.6 As pope, Gregory the Great rescued
Rome from "degradation, revived arts and letters, and threw the full weight of the new Benedictine monasticism behind the conversion of Europe."7 Throughout his papacy, Gregory continued to write extensively.
