and located actually between the Hudson River and Broadway, where Sixth Avenue is also a dividing line ("Greenwich and West," 2005). Greenwich Village is well known for its existence as
an artists colony of sorts, at least during the first decade of the twentieth century (Ellis, 1997). Yet, since that time, it has grown to be an exquisite and expensive
neighborhood that continues to support creative endeavors. Still, the old artist lifestyle is gone and replaced by an elite class that raises its families in the midst of New
York City. The Village had during the early part of the twentieth century been populated mostly by Italians who would become annoyed by the influx of writers and artists
(Ellis, 1997). With so many talented people in one region, the area would become well established for the nations literary movement (1997). The Village would attract the likes of
poets as well as men who boasted long hair (1997). An example is well known playwright Eugene ONeill, a writer who dropped out of Princeton and would drift aimlessly before
embarking on his plays (1997). The draw of the region was the people and the people maintained the buildings and trees in order to render an atmosphere conducive to creativity.
Greenwich Village borders the East Village, Soho, Chelsea and Gramercy Park. While each neighborhood has its own flavor and certainly Gramercy Park becomes more conservative, Soho and the East Village
also have an artsy feel. Chelsea has been a favorite of film makers and television producers. The sleeper hit Chelsea Walls demonstrated how artists of all genres flock to the
dilapidated Chelsea Hotel that had been frequented by some well known individuals. But Greenwich Village, unlike some of its surrounding areas, has always been a bit more expensive and trendy
