to their environmental efforts to promote themselves or at least mitigate bad press. However, when such claims are not true or misleading, it is called "greenwashing." In other words, a
firm wants to create a green image so it is thought that the firm is environmentally friendly, but that is just an image and there are no facts to back
that up. Why would a firm go to great lengths to do such a thing? It goes to good public relations. Firms want to be thought of in a good
light and so they jump on the bandwagon as it respects various causes. Greenwashing goes on in a variety of industries. On Earth Day for example, it is an event
that would seemingly move people forward and in fact, the dominant environmental groups did begin with battles against true villains such as DDT (Nixon, 1995). However, things changed as
time went on and issues were not quite so significant. In 1971, for instance, Greenpeace decided to address the topic of the slaughter of whales (1995). The Citizens Clearinghouse on
Hazardous Wastes have attracted many community groups and have organized in an effort to address dangerous health threats; they were really not there to collect litter or to hear free
concerts (1995). But Earth Day grew into something of a circus-like atmosphere. So when Earth Day rolls around, it seems to attract opportunists. They simply attach themselves to some cause
in order to make themselves look good. Some true environmentalists are afraid of Earth Day as it prompts a "tidal wave of corporate greenwashing that drowns their efforts to reach
