industry, and trucking fleets alike are now very aware of the importance of controlling their emissions. The reason is that greenhouse gas emissions have been proven to have an
adverse impact on the earths climate (Bode, 2006). Long-term emission reductions are a must but establishing clear goals and limitations in that task has been complicated by disagreements as
to the specifics of those goals and limitations. Even how these gases are measured has been a controversial topic. While the importance of greenhouse gases like carbon monoxide
has been acknowledged for some time and measurement methodology standardized, other parameters such as particulates and methane are surrounded more by confusion than they are clear understanding and methodologies.
The greenhouse effect, that natural regulator of the earths climate, has been altered by the addition of pollutants to the atmosphere. What was
once a precise regulator of the climate has now been compounded in its intensity. Instead of preserving the degree of ice coverage over the earth which existing ecologies have
evolved in adaptation to, the greenhouse effect has now been magnified so that it is melting a greater and greater percentage of this ice. The increased concentrations of certain
gases now act as a more impenetrable barrier which prevents heat from escaping our atmosphere and acts to melt more and more of the glacier ice. Some researchers even
contend that global warming has the potential to impact even such major elements of our climatic regulators as El Nino. Given the impacts
of the continued discharge of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere it is clear that immediate action on the part of commercial fleets in particular is imperative. That action, unfortunately,
