The game production and distribution process presents certain potential environmental impacts. Fortunately, many of these companies have undertaken a green initiative with the express purpose of reducing these impacts.
While considerable progress has been made, however, much remains to be accomplished in this regard. Numerous criteria can be used to gauge
any particular companys progress in terms of green initiative. While the companies have precise regulatory standards that they have to comply with, they also have to withstand public scrutiny
in terms of their green initiative. Various environmental organizations like Greenpeace oversee this initiative and serve as self-appointed environmental watch dogs. By Greenpeaces criteria a company is considered in
compliance with a green initiative if they are 1. actively eliminating chemicals from their production process that are even suspected of being environmentally harmful, 2. definitely eliminating all
banned and restricted substances from that process, 3. has in place a timeline for phasing out the use of PVC (poly vinyl chloride) and brominated flame retardants (BFR), 4.
produces PVC and BFR free products, 5. actively manages a recycling program (even where it is not legally required) where it encourages customers to return unwanted products to
the company so that they can be appropriately reused and recycled, and 6. follows up on such a takeback program with customer information and reports on its e-waste collection
and recycling (Greener World Media, 2008). In its most recent review of eighteen PC, cell phone, TV and video game console
manufacturers, Greenpeace ranked Nintendo at the bottom in terms of its green initiative. Greener World Media (2008), however, contends that this ranking is due more to the fact that
