Essay / Research Paper Abstract

3 pages in length. Since the dawn of the Industrial Age, the planet has been in a perpetual state of degradation from human activity; that such tremendous damage exists in virtually every aspect of man's progression over the last century speaks to an oversized environmental footprint left behind in the name of humanity's self-serving pursuits. The twenty-first century has become a watershed moment whereby considerable backpedaling is being undertaken in order to forestall anymore destruction and perhaps even reverse it by some degree, a movement that recognizes the impact of greening through sustainable development as one of the most important steps in the overall process. The twenty-first century has become a watershed moment whereby considerable backpedaling is being undertaken in order to forestall anymore destruction and perhaps even reverse it by some degree, a movement that recognizes the impact of greening through sustainable development as one of the most important steps in the overall process. Creating a green data center involves a number of components that work synergistically toward the goal of "treading lightly" upon the environment. For the most part, renewable sources such as solar and wind are considered free reservoirs of energy because there is no cost associated with such sources, however, the start-up costs can be quite prohibitive yet once the various units are in place (water heaters, roof panels), there is very little cost involved in maintaining efficiency. As well, tax credits are becoming available to those who equip their buildings with solar powered units. According to a report entitled "Economics of Solar Energy Technologies" by Drs. R. W. Larson, F. Vignola and R. West, the projected societal costs for energy for the Year 2000 included the following on a cost-in-cents by kilowatt-hour basis: Low High Wind 4 8 Photovoltaics 8 15.5 Biomass Electric 5 5 Solar Thermal Electric 8 15.5 Natural Gas 6 9 Coal 7.8 11.5 Nuclear 8 12.5 (Larson et al, 1992). The way in which employees get to and from the data center is a big part of how green the entire project truly is. One way this objective can be met is by having staff use business vehicles that run on alternative fuel sources. The slow transition from fossil fuels to such alternatives as natural gas, propane, ethanol, methanol or electricity began more than a decade ago ...
