the centuries and architecture that often stands the test of time. The following paper examines two different theaters, the Epidauros from Greece and the Colosseum from Rome, comparing and contrasting
the two. Greek and Roman Theater The discussion will first involve an examination of the basic elements of the two structures.
In the case of the Colosseum the architect is unknown and the construction of the structure is dated back to around 80 AD (Great Buildings [1], 2008). Its architectural
style is referred to as an amphitheater which is essentially an open theater (Great Buildings [1], 2008). The construction system consists of cut stone and bearing masonry within a context
that was considered urban (Great Buildings [1], 2008). The style is that of the Ancient Romans and is "Classical, Doric, Ionic" with "Corinthian engaged columns, Corinthian pilasters" (Great Buildings [1],
2008). Epidauross architect was Polykleitos which, in this simple perspective, makes it a bit different from the Colosseum in that more
of its history is known (Great Buildings [2], 2008). It is also a structure that dates far further back than the Colosseum, back to 300 BC. (Great Buildings [2], 2008).
As such one could clearly argue that the basic design of the Epidauros influenced the design and construction of the Colosseum. The style of this building is also considered to
be an ampitheater and, like the Epidauros, it is constructed from stone and a system of bearing masonry (Great Buildings [2], 2008). However, its particular context was not urban, like
