impact is without question. The Greeks and the Romans revealed through their art volumes about their culture, their lives, their fears and their joy. And yet, despite the
similarities between the two cultures and their subsequent works of art, the Greeks had more of an impact upon both civilizations. Perhaps the best reason for this is that
the Greeks produced art long before the Romans, and thus Roman art is a derivative of Greek art. Greek artists
were known for their sophistication that is "arguably unmatched by any other contemporary civilization in the West" (The Art of Rome, 2003). Because of this, it is easy to
see why the Romans were so enthralled with Greek art and inspired by its beauty and complexity (The Art of Rome, 2003). Ancient Greek art emphasized order, harmony and
balance, but also was known for celebrating the human figure (The Art of Rome, 2003). The fact that Greek art has had such an enduring and lasting appeal throughout
centuries is testament to its classical technical merit (The Art of Rome, 2003). These were indeed the qualities which inspired the Romans and which helped the Romans form their
own artistic style (The Art of Rome, 2003). Greek art went through several different periods as well, the first being the Geometric
period (The Art of Rome, 2003). This was perhaps the earliest period of Greek art, and is reflected in the precise geometric patterns artists of that era used to
