offers windows into the past, as they convey not only events but also how a particular cultures worldview. Literary windows into the past show modern readers that Greek culture had
profound and complex ideas concerning the nature of religion, virtue and heroism. For example, in "Prometheus Bound" by Aeschylus, numerous themes are expressed, but one of the most pervasive
is the conflict between tyranny and friendship. Prometheus originally aided in Zeus with his guile, i.e., intellect, in order to defeat the Titans, but when Prometheus values his friendship with
human mortals over obedience to Zeus and gives them numerous gifts, including fire, he is chained to a rock and daily tortured by Zeuss eagle. While set within the realm
of mythology, this play is primarily political, rather than religious, in nature, as Prometheus heroically represents resistance to tyranny, even in the face of daily and unending torture. When the
chorus urges him to be cautious, so that Zeus will not inflict more agony, Prometheus says, "Go thou and worship; fold thy hands in prayer,/and be the dog that licks
the foot of power!/Nothing care I for Zeus" (Aeschylus). In other words, Prometheus will not succumb to tyranny and a power that rules by force, rather than through virtue, friendship,
etc. The ideals esteemed by Greek culture are so intrinsic to its cultural worldview that Homer pictures the Trojans has also subscribing to Greek cultural values. For example, in
